Fall in Ohio is a season that begs to be savored. Crisp evenings, colorful leaves, and the comforting aromas of apples, squash, and spices set the stage for memorable meals. At Tano Bistro, fall is one of our favorite times to gather around the table, highlighting fresh seasonal ingredients with thoughtful food and wine pairings.

Why Fall Ingredients Shine

Autumn brings a bounty of flavors that are both cozy and elevated. Apples, pears, squash, root vegetables, and earthy mushrooms all take center stage, while herbs like sage, thyme, and rosemary bring warmth and depth. These ingredients aren’t just seasonal—they’re a way to connect to the rhythm of Ohio’s farms and orchards.

When paired with the right wine, these flavors truly come alive. A crisp Sauvignon Blanc can brighten roasted vegetables, while a bold Cabernet pairs beautifully with braised short ribs or steak. Even sparkling wines and ciders have their moment this season, offering a festive touch to apple-based dishes and desserts.

Pairing Tips to Try at Home

Want to bring a little Tano magic to your table this fall? These wine + food pairing tips are inspired by autumn flavors, comfort cooking, and what makes seasonal ingredients shine.

Butternut Squash Soup + Chardonnay – The creamy texture + nutty squash is balanced by the buttery/oaky notes of Chardonnay. Viognier’s floral and stone-fruit notes add brightness without overpowering.

Apple & Pork + Riesling – The apple brings tartness and sweetness; a wine with a touch of sweetness and good acid cuts through the pork and highlights the fruit.

Wild Mushroom Risotto + Pinot Noir – Mushrooms and Pinot Noir often have “earthy” notes that harmonize. The wine’s acidity lifts the richness of the risotto.

Pumpkin Ravioli or Gnocchi + Dry Sparkling Wine or Rose - Bubbles refresh the palate after rich sauce; the light fruit and effervescence play nicely with the creamy texture.

Turkey (herb roasted) with Gravy, Cranberry or Apple Accents + Pinot Noir – Earthy reds that aren’t too heavy let the turkey and the side flavors shine (especially if there’s acidity from cranberries/apples).
